Abstract/Sommario: This anthology presents new research related to welfare state, child care policies and small children's every day lives in early childhood education and care in institutions in Europe. The anthology takes as a point of departure a close connection between labor market and work life on one side and develo ...; [Leggi tutto...] This anthology presents new research related to welfare state, child care policies and small children's every day lives in early childhood education and care in institutions in Europe. By uniting recent social childhood research, welfare perspectives as well as historical and comparative approaches, institutionalization as a feature of modern child life is discussed. The anthology takes as a point of departure a close connection between labor market and work life on one side and development of particular care arrangements for small children on another. Both the labour market and day-care institutions are influenced by similar concepts such as flexibility, neo-liberal approaches, and user-orientation. In light of recent changes in ECEC (Early Childhood Education and Care) policy and various adult constructions of (good) childhoods, this collection explores how girls and boys are together working out identities like the 'active and participant child', 'the natural child', 'the flexible child', and 'the individual child'.

Abstract/Sommario: Economic globalisation, modern transportation, and advanced communication technologies have greatly enhanced the mobility of people across national boundaries. This book brings together scholars from 5 different countries to discuss the relationship between work, learning, knowledge, and citizenship in the context of globalisation.

Abstract/Sommario: The book maps out the development of immigrants' social rights from the early postwar period until around 2010 in six countries representing different welfare state regimes: the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Sweden, and Denmark. Part I addresses three major issues. The first is how inclusive or exclusionary welfare state policies are in relation to immigrants, and especially how the type of welfare state and incorporation regime affect their social rights. Part I addresses three major issues. The first is how inclusive or exclusionary welfare state policies are in relation to immigrants, and especially how the type of welfare state and incorporation regime affect their social rights. The second issue concerns changes in immigrant rights and the direction of the change: rights extension versus rights contraction. The third issue is how immigrants' social rights compare to those of citizens. Part II shifts from policies affecting immigrant rights to the politics of the policies. It examines the politics of inclusion and exclusion in the six countries, focusing on social rights extension and contraction and changes in the policy dimensions of the incorporation regime that impinge on immigrants rights.
