Abstract/Sommario: The report offers a comprehensive picture of the experience of workers and businesses on online web-based and location-based platforms, drawing on surveys and interviews with some 12,000 workers and representatives of 85 businesses around the world, in multiple sectors. It also provides insights into the digital labour platform as a business model, examines regulatory responses across the globe, and presents a way forward to ensure all platform work is decent work.

However, if policy instruments are not carefully designed, they could exacerbate the employment situation and aggravate further equity concerns, with potentially long-lasting adverse consequences for both the economy and society.

Income inequalities continue to widen in advanced economies and although they have stabilized somewhat in large emerging and developing countries, they remain acute and progress in this area is still fragile. The report analyses these trends and discusses the conditions necessary for putting job creation at the heart of policy making.

However, this approach has failed to address the vulnerable economic growth patterns typically found in many developing countries, rising youth unemployment, including among graduates, and widening income inequalities. However, this approach has failed to address the vulnerable economic growth patterns typically found in many developing countries, rising youth unemployment, including among graduates, and widening income inequalities. This report assembles new evidence based on a detailed examination of trends and policy innovations in over 140 developing countries. It finds that strategies which focus on promoting decent work opportunities tend to yield sustained development results. Few countries that improve economic growth without a corresponding increase in quality jobs manage to sustain healthy economic performance. By contrast, economic growth that goes hand-inhand with improved decent work outcomes is generally found to be sustainable.

Following chapters on understanding disability and measuring disability, the report contains topic-specific chapters on health; rehabilitation; assistance and support; enabling environments; education; and employment. Within each chapter, there is a discussion of the barriers confronted, and case studies showing how countries have succeeded in addressing these by promoting good practice. In its final chapter, the report offers nine concrete recommendations for policy and practice which if put in place could lead to real improvements in the lives of people with disability.

La prima relazione sulla disabilità realizzata della Banca Mondiale dell’OMS sottolinea la situazione delle persone disabili nel mondo. Ad alcuni capitoli dedicati alla comprensione e alla valutazione della disabilità, ne seguono altri di approfondimento su specifiche materie: salute; riabilitazione; assistenza e supporto; ambienti favorevoli; educazione e impiego. In ciascun capitolo troviamo una discussione sulle barriere rilevate e studi di caso che rilevano come i vari paesi siano riusciti ad affrontare tali problematiche promuovendo buone pratiche. Nel capitolo finale, la relazione offre nove raccomandazioni concrete per le politiche e le azioni che, se messe in atto, potrebbero realmente migliorare la vita delle persone con disabilità.

Abstract/Sommario: Young people in Europe have been particularly affected by the recession: by mid-2013, the unemployment rate among people aged 24 and under was over 23%. A large proportion of workers in this age group are employed on temporary rather than permanent contracts (42% compared to just 10% of workers aged 25–64). While temporary or fixed-term contracts can be a stepping stone in the transition from education into work, they can also trap young people in insecure jobs. While temporary or fixed-term contracts can be a stepping stone in the transition from education into work, they can also trap young people in insecure jobs. This report from the European Restructuring Monitor is based on data from correspondents in 28 EU Member States and Norway. It examines the reasons for the growth in temporary employment contracts across the EU and explores the situation regarding access to social protection for young people on such contracts. It reviews the measures put in place in various countries to regulate the use of these contracts – often with a view to encouraging the transition to standard contracts – and finally presents the opinions of the social partners on the issue.
