Abstract: This report describes the characteristics of the young people who face most difficulties in accessing social and health services, the types of services most relevant to them and the main challenges they face in accessing information and support services. It also looks at what service providers can do to ensure they reach young people in need of their support and presents innovative examples of how to tackle inequalities in access to services.

Si concentra su quattro progetti realizzati nelle due capitali europee della cultura del 2013 - Marsiglia-Provenza (Francia) e Košice (Slovacchia) - nell'ambito del programma "Quartiers Créatifs" e del programma SPOTs. Combinando diversi filoni della teoria democratica e applicando la metodologia del process tracing, il libro sostiene che la partecipazione produce processi di sviluppo culturale solo quando si raggiunge una certa intensità di fiducia tra i vari attori. In presenza di una fiducia completa, la partecipazione attiva una catena di consolidamento delle capacità e del capitale sociale che alimenta reti culturali a lungo termine. Al contrario, in assenza di una fiducia completa, la partecipazione può generare movimenti di contestazione o una produzione culturale isolata. In modo unico, il libro sfida l'"aura ottimista" della governance partecipativa della cultura, mostrando la sua natura conflittuale ma sempre produttiva.

Abstract: This report explores how Europeans perceive the quality of their societies, and of their public services. It looks at such aspects of society as trust in institutions and other people, perceived tensions between social groups, attitudes towards migrants and the effects of the economic crisis on social inclusion and social cohesion. It  nds that satisfaction with the economic situation of one’s country, not being in employment and overall life satisfaction appear to boost satisfaction ...; [Read more...] This report explores how Europeans perceive the quality of their societies, and of their public services. It looks at such aspects of society as trust in institutions and other people, perceived tensions between social groups, attitudes towards migrants and the effects of the economic crisis on social inclusion and social cohesion. It  nds that satisfaction with the economic situation of one’s country, not being in employment and overall life satisfaction appear to boost satisfaction with public services; hardship appears to reduce it. In societal terms, trust in institutions decreased visibly from 2007 to 2011. Trust in people however changed less than trust in institutions and is more similar across the EU. A positive relationship exists between trust in institutions and satisfaction with the economic situation of one’s own country; a negative relationship between trust in institutions and inequality. And tensions were perceived to be highest between different racial and ethnic groups and between rich and poor.

Abstract: This report examines social inequalities in the distribution of freedoms and opportunities among individuals and population subgroups in Europe. It examines the role of important determinants of social inequalities including gender, ag ...; [Read more...] This report examines social inequalities in the distribution of freedoms and opportunities among individuals and population subgroups in Europe. Using data from the European Quality of Life Survey (EQLS), the report builds up an evidence base on social inequalities in four critical areas of life: health, standard of living, productive and valued activities, and individual, family and social life. It examines the role of important determinants of social inequalities including gender, age, disability status, employment status and citizenship status, as well as other drivers. The report finds that, in some instances, there is evidence of disadvantages becoming more prevalent and social inequalities widening between the second wave of the EQLS in 2007 and the third wave in 2011. It recommends that growing policy attention to the multidimensional aspects of well-being be coupled with effective public action to address social inequalities and integrated into general policies at the European and Member State levels.

In 2011, GDP per capita in 22 out of the then 27 EU Member States was below 2008 levels, and unemployment rates were higher in 25 out of the 27. These indicators demonstrate worrying trends, but the report goes deeper, trying to answer various questions: What is the real impact on people’s lives? Who has been hit hardest? Where have there been positive wellbeing patterns? What explains the variation in well-being across Europe? How can policy increase or stem the fall in well-being in the future? It concludes that the crisis may not be affecting everyone’s well-being equally, nor all aspects of well-being. Well-being has fallen in many EU countries, remaining highest in northern countries. However, falls in wellbeing in many western EU countries have been matched by increases in eastern countries. Population groups with low well-being include those limited by disability or illness and unemployed people.

One of its findings is that subjective well-being has remained stable across the EU as whole, but it also finds that financial strain in households has grown in the wake of the economic crisis. The report proposes a more active approach to social protection, as lower household income is a strong negative influence on quality of life, and especially so in an economic downturn.
