Telework and ICT-based mobile work (TICTM) has emerged in this transition, giving workers and employers the ability to adapt the time and location of work to their needs. Despite the flexibility and higher level of worker autonomy inherent in TICTM, there are risks that this work arrangement leads to the deterioration of work–life balance, higher stress levels and failing worker health.

Abstract: The 12 chapters collected in this volume provide a multidisciplinary perspective on the impact and the future trajectories of remote work. They raise, discuss and explore fundamental questions emerging around remote work: from the nexus between the location from where work is performed and how it is performed to how remote locations may affect the way work is managed and organised, as well as the applicability of existing legislation. Additional questions concern remote work’s environmental and social impact and the rapidly changing nature of the relationship between work and life. The contributions in this volume develop along several complementary axes, ranging from the discussion of global and societal dynamics to the implications for the contractual relationship between employers and workers. The transformation of the spatial component of work is considered both as a potential paradigm shift for the world of work and as a challenge for the implementation of specific regulatory regimes.

Oggi, invece che ritornare alla normalità di prima, abbiamo la possibilità di potenziare quel modello capitalizzando su ciò che nel bene e nel male è stato realizzato in questi ultimi lunghi mesi avviando un processo di cambiamento che non è un progetto qualsiasi, ma è un progetto di change management che coinvolge tutti gli enti e tutti i dipendenti e cambia il paradigma organizzativo. Il volume citato è un lavoro realizzato a più mani tenendo conto dell’esperienza maturata nella pubblica amministrazione italiana da una ventina di soggetti, tutti operanti negli enti di ricerca italiani, che vi hanno collaborato raccontando le loro esperienze di smart working.

Abstract: The paper discusses the extent of teleworking in the EU before and during the COVID-19 outbreak, develops a conceptual analysis to identify the jobs that can be done from home and those that cannot, and on this basis quantifies the fraction of employees that are in teleworkable occupations across EU countries, sectors and socio-economic profiles.
